Shedding light on language of the past

The research into the old language and sentence project was led as one of the Language and Literature Bureau’s (DBP) initiatives to help introduce the language and sentences of the past rarely used today, said Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab at DBP Library Kampong Pandan during the Penyelidikan Bahasa dan Kalimat Tua project yesterday.

“Researching the old language and sentences can help enrich the Malay vocabulary of our nation, while also promoting and raising awareness on the origins of our language that is used by the communities of the past,” he said.

The event was held by DBP through its Research, Documentation and Recognition Division to further record, preserve, and research various languages used by the people of Brunei in the past.

Mukim Penghulu, village heads as well as heads and members from the Belait Senior Citizens Activity Centre also attended the event.

Some topics discussed during the event included a short introduction of the project by the Head of Research, Documentation and Recognition Division Hajah Haireni binti Haji Awang Damit.

The attendees were also enlivened with an introduction to the old language and sentences used in the past by experts Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud bin Haji Bakyr and Associate Professor Dr Haji Hashim bin Haji Abdul Hamid.

DBP also added that the department plans to continue their visits across the nation to meet and discuss with Mukim Penghulu, village heads, and senior citizens to help introduce the project among them to share their knowledge and understanding of the old language and sentences used in the past.

The talks and briefing will continue in the Brunei-Muara and Temburong districts at Sarmayuda Hall of the DBP in Airport Lama, Berakas.
