    Seminar focusses on patent protection

    The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) with the support of the Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) yesterday hosted the ‘Patent Protection: Securing the Rights to Your Innovation’ seminar at the Seri Kerna Hall, AITI Office in Anggerek Desa.

    The first speaker was Senior Manager at the Innovation and Enterprise Office, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Dr Nagender Aneja who talked about patentability criteria and ways to find out whether an invention is new/novel/non-obvious or otherwise. Participants were tested with an exercise on how to do a prior art search.

    Dr Nagender then facilitated a workshop on patent drafting. Through this workshop, participants had a go at writing and describing patent claims.

    The Patent System in Brunei was then presented by Senior Legal Officer at the Attorney General’s Chambers Hajah Zunaidah binti Haji Ramli/Ismail and Assistant Executive Officer of BruIPO Yapp Shih Kuo @ Yapp Zhuan Rong.

    Rabi’atul Adawiyah binti Abdullah of Grand IP Technologies then shared her views on patent commercialisation. She followed this talk with her experience gaining PCT (World) Made in Brunei granted patent: Colour Solar Panel Coating Technology.

    The final talk was on the topic of patent enforcement/infringement and post-filing activities by two presenters from CCW Partnership – On Hung Zheng and Jacqueline Lau. It was mentioned that currently there are no IP infringement cases in Brunei so far.

    This workshop is organised to increase awareness on patent value and processes with aim to increase the number of commercialised Infocommunication Technology (ICT) patents in Brunei. More than 50 participants comprising of representatives of the ICT industry, micro, small and mediun enterprises(MSMEs), chief information officers/chief technology officers (CIOs/CTOs), students and members of the public attended the workshop.
