Sarawak MMEA uses helicopters to identify illegal foreign fishing boats

KUCHING (Bernama) – The Sarawak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is currently using AW139 helicopters in the operation codenamed ‘Op Naga Timur’ to identify illegal foreign fishing boats in the state’s waters.

Its Director First Admiral Robert Teh Geok Chuan said the Maritime Air Operations Division conducted daily aerial surveillance of areas up to 150 nautical miles from the coast.

“This operation does not only involve the state’s maritime assets, but also the Air Operations Division and the MMEA’s Special Task and Rescue (STAR) unit.

“This effort demonstrates MMEA’s commitment in carrying out its responsibility to protect the waters of the country,” he said in a statement yesterday.
