HER Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah joined 80 Year 6 students in the year group production, R for Resilience.

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn,” said Her Royal Highness in one of the many scenes of R for Resilience.

This line in particular held a strong emphasis in the story as it was spoken and repeated throughout the play.

Performed at the Black Box Theatre located at the Jerudong International School (JIS) Arts Centre, Year 6 students brought to life on stage the stories of the famous polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton, and the failed NASA mission of Apollo 13. Contrary to the standard styles of musicals, R for Resilience reflected the topics learnt by Year 6 students in Term 1, revolving around the topic of survivors.

Students also included current stories on refugee survivors in their performance which delivered an intense and sentimental experience for the audience.

Head of Junior School Music and Drama Anna Hogan directed and co-wrote the script with the Year 6 students. It looked at what all the people had in common to survive and achieve through adversity, eventually leading them to admire resilience and leadership.

“Every year a group at JIS does an annual production that supports the children developing important communication skills in front of an audience. They are encouraged to show their ideas creatively to engage an audience,” added Anna.

At the Jerudong International School, Drama is introduced in junior school from Year 3 to Year 6. This allows students to grow in self-confidence as well as providing them with a means of re-evaluating and re-visiting topics taught in the classroom in a different way and context.
