Royalty attend Aewon Badminton Open

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman attended the Aewon Badminton Open Championship 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim advanced to the semi-finals of the Men’s Singles (Under-12) category after he defeated Muhammad Mirza Afif Syahmi bin Sofian in straight sets 21-16, 21-18.

Also in attendance was Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda Muhammad Aiman.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim enjoyed a run of four straight points in the opening set before taking an 11-9 lead in the midway point. Muhammad Mirza Afif Syahmi clawed his way back contention with two straight points to close the gap.

Another impressive run of five consecutive points for Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim propelled him to an 18-11 cushion before sealing the first set.

Muhammad Mirza Afif Syahmi looked to seize the initiative in the second set with a 9-3 lead but Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim rallied to level the tie 10-10.

With both players tied 18-18, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim converted three straight points to seal the win.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim will meet Muhammad Talipudin bin Ermadena in the last four tonight after the latter triumphed against Mohd Aiman Izzuddin Mohd Alimasdi in straight sets 21-11 21-7.

The other semi-final will see Mohd Haziq bin Roze taking on Dessen Chung Min Tin. Mohd Haziq made light work of Mohd Daffa Dany bin Ali Hussin in a 21-3, 21-4 win while Dessen was equally convincing with a 21-5, 21-10 win over Muhammad Hamizan bin Maysufrizal.

Other categories being contested last night were Men’s Singles Open, Men’s Doubles ‘A’ and Men’s Doubles ‘B’. The tournament will also see the quarterfinals of the Women’s Doubles Open in action with the pair of Siti Marinah binti Mohd Salleh and Nuraqilah binti Haji Shahroney looking to add another domestic title to their collection.

The pair will face Nurdalila binti Ismail and Nur Hidayatulisma binti Ismail in their first outing in this year’s Aewon Badminton Open having received a bye in the opening round.

Besides the Men’s Singles (Under-12) and the Women’s Doubles, the tournament will continue with events in the Men’s Doubles ‘A’, Men’s Doubles ‘B’, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Singles and Veteran Doubles.
