HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam along with other members of the royal family attended the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration organised by the local Chinese community at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on February 20.
Chung Hwa Middle School’s Board of Directors, principals, teachers and students participated in the celebration.
Their Majesties and members of the royal family were greeted by members of the organising committee of the grand event. The ceremony then began with the singing of the national anthem, which was subsequently followed by vibrant performances that included traditional dances, wushu, Chinese New Year songs and others. Their Majesties, members of the royal family and the audience were clearly entertained by these outstanding performances presented by immensely talented students from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB.
In an interview, one of the performers said, “I did my best to impress Their Majesties and the audience. I was very nervous before my performance began, but as I started dancing, my nervousness melted away.” Many of the performers felt honoured and grateful to be given the opportunity to perform in front of Their Majesties, members of the royal family and other eminent guests. Another performer added that she regarded this event as an avenue to express herself and to demonstrate the uniqueness and beauty of her traditional culture.
Their Majesties and other guests graciously thanked the performers in person, and many in the audience seized the chance for up-close-and-personal photo opportunities. – Boh Zhi Wei, Year 10 Science1
