‘The Role of Livestock Industry in Supporting Food Security for Livestock Commodities’ became one of the main focal papers at ‘Agriculture Sector: Challenges and Way Forward’ conference organised by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) through the Department of Agriculture and Agri-food in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibitions (MYCE) 2021 at the International Convention Centre yesterday.
Presenting on the topic was Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Hajah Dahliana binti Haji Aliakbar, who highlighted the roles of the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, which in a national context is the effort to support food security where adequate, safe and nutritious food (protein source) is a key role for the livestock industry.
“Subsistence is a combination of adding farm produce to the processing phase to make food as commercial commodities,” she said. “So once we have produced an abundance, we can channel it towards exportation.”
Hajah Dahliana also shared the agricultural commodities produced in the country and the level of self-sufficiency in 2020, which was 98.2 per cent broiler chicken, 100 per cent eggs, 90.16 per cent broiler chicks, 55.86 per cent seeded eggs, 61.84 per cent buffalos/cows, 19.96 per cent sheep/goat and 39.96 per cent livestock food.
Through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, the deputy permanent secretary shared, a number of initiatives have been implemented to support the industry’s hopes to develop food security which are setting a clear and concise direction for key performance indicators, grant of agricultural sites, provision of support services, and providing advice and brief training.
Hajah Dahliana also detailed the need to enhance the agriculture industry production, Veterinary Laboratory Service for Disease Diagnostic, recognition of the Salmonella (Poultry) Reference Laboratory, relocation and upgrading of the Veterinary Laboratory, investment in the livestock industry, and how the livestock industry has contributed to the economic diversification of Brunei Darussalam.
