Several dedicated sites for rest areas along the Muara-Belait highway are in the works by the Ministry of Development, said Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Ir Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar during the 17th Legislative Council session yesterday.
He was responding to a suggestion by Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Haji Tahamit bin Haji Nudin on allocating land for rest-stops for the safety and comfort of commuters. He said the long drives on the quiet highways, especially at night, can lead to accidents caused by commuters’ fatigue.
“Rest areas along with convenient facilities will make travelling safer and more comfortable, especially for those who need to drive long distance,” he said, adding that facilities such as food stalls, toilets, Surau, banking services (ATM) and information centres should also be included.
Although no timeline was provided on the completion of the rest stops, the minister clarified that it will be built on government property and operated by a private entity.
