Built on October 1, 1982, the mosque has since brought the local community together through religious and communal activities.

The mosque was officially opened by then Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Umar on January 1, 1984.

In its early years, Kampong Sungai Besar Mosque was able to accommodate up to 280 congregants. Due to the increase in the number of congregants, the mosque was extended twice.
