Regular cleanup campaigns can do wonders for environment

A CHALLENGE went viral worldwide recently where people shared photos of littered areas before and after cleaning them up as part of the challenge.

Despite it being a trend, I believe it was a good way for people to start taking interest in cleaning the environment.

I believe that interest in cleaning the environment needs to be introduced to ensure that people will make it a habit.

It is heartening to see various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working together with companies to clean up locations such as beaches, parks and hiking trails.

I would like to suggest that government organisations alongside NGOs conduct regular cleanup campaigns, perhaps once every month with ministries participating on a rotation basis.

Villages and mukims should also participate by having members of the community participate and cleanup the area, for instance every last Sunday of the month. This can inculcate the spirit of gotong-royong and help create camaraderie between members of the community.
