THE Royal Customs and Excise Department (RCED), Ministry of Finance and Economy, would like to thank Seeking for Justice for the letter ‘Paying the fine for something unintentional’ published in the Opinion page of the Borneo Bulletin on October 17, 2018.

Members of the public are also reminded that as specified in Section 136 of Customs (Amendment) Order 2018 and Section 142 of Excise (Amendment) Order 2018, making a false declaration or failure to make dutiable declaration as required is a compoundable offence of not exceeding BND5,000.
If exceeding the compound amount, the person shall be liable on conviction to a fine equivalent of the amount customs duty payable or USD40,000 whichever is the greater and imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both as specified in Section 138 of Customs Order 2006 and Section 144 of Excise Order 2006.
