Reeling from plight of COVID-19

I would like to applaud the authorities for having done such a stellar job in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two and a half years. Now that the worst of the crisis is safely behind us, we can move on to the recovery phase.

During the height of the pandemic, health workers were understandably not allowed to take leave to ensure enough manpower was available to fight the virus.

However, I believe that quite a number of them are suffering from the plight of the situation.

Despite powering through the crisis, these health workers are not allowed to take the remaining annual leave days as they are deemed to have expired.

For expats, the crisis had prevented them from returning to their home countries; and now they are allowed only to take a fraction of their contracted annual leave days.

While I’m not sure if it happens to all health workers in the country, such an arrangement is unfair to those who had sacrificed a lot for the crisis. If it continues without a resolution, it may serve to discourage people from joining the healthcare sector.
