Receptionist sentenced to 18 months for embezzlement

A HOTEL receptionist who admitted to embezzling money from his former employer was yesterday sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment, by the Magistrate’s Court.

Wan Afrezuan bin Mohammed/Mohammat, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that he had misappropriated BND14,673.60 from The Empire Hotel & Country Club between August 18, 2017 and February 15, 2018.

He also admitted to forging five invoices from the hotel, which were addressed to the Brunei Research Department of the Prime Minister’s Office on August 20, 2017, October 3, 2017 and February 19, 2018.

His actions were discovered when the hotel followed up with the government agency on outstanding payments for room reservations.

Subsequent police investigations revealed that the defendant had handed the money over to another person.

DPP Emily Goh represented the prosecution’s case, while Senior Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah binti Haji Mohd Hussain presided over the proceedings.
