Raya or no Raya, we must follow health protocols

I would like to applaud the authorities for continuing to highlight the importance of observing the health protocols, especially amid the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, when visiting relatives is part of our culture.

However, while celebrants make sure to screen for infection prior to house visits during the holiday season, a greater number of people have chosen to spend the break at shopping malls where the measures are more lax.

I am rather disappointed by the fact that while sound, the advisory leading up the Raya essentially forced the public to pick a side: celebrate with family under close scrutiny or shop away the holidays with relative freedom.

My call is directed at the public to continue following the standard operating procedures; they are in place for a reason – to keep us from harm’s way. Just because you have opted out of Raya celebration doesn’t mean that you should abandon social responsibility in COVID-19 times.
