TELCO giant, DST brought Hari Raya cheer to several underprivileged families in Brunei-Muara District yesterday as part of Ihsan Kasih, an annual charity drive organised during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Yesterday’s team was led by Manager for Infrastructure Operations, Access Network and Technical Division at DST Daniel Liew along with a dozen of officials and staff from DST.

This year, the drive began its journey just before Ramadhan starting with rural areas in Ulu Belait and Tutong and will continue in other districts until the end of Ramadhan.

DST has increased its assistance for the number of families from 170 in 2018 to 210 families in 2019. This was a result from successful collaborations with partners such as Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT), Projek Bina Ukhwah and Radio Television Brunei (RTB) with listings provided from agencies such as the Community Development Department (JAPEM), Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB), mosque youth programmes and hospitals.

DST also collaborated with local companies such as Sabli Food to supply local canned foods – corned beef and chicken rendang, as well as local small medium business, Syarikat R&Z Moga Jaya in Tamu Kianggeh on traditional local foods such as dried shrimp, shrimp paste (belacan) and smoked fish (tahai).

The drive has been a flagship for DST’s Corporate Social Responsibility since it began in 2007 with a simple gesture, “to do beautiful things for the community”.

Project owner Elixsurian bin Haji Busu who is also the Manager of Group Corporate Communications has coordinated the drive for more than a decade and spoke about his experience recently.

“Each year, it is always our main aim to reach out to the underprivileged families especially orphans, single mothers and special needs individuals. We visit these families in remote areas where the only means of access is by rivers and through dense jungles.

“Nowadays, with proper paved roads we have expanded our journey where we are able to reach more families in the rural parts of Brunei.

“Regardless of the difficulties during these journeys, we are always received with warmth and smiles from the families and their children. It is during these moments that we listen to their stories and share moments of comfort.”

Aside from the Ihsan Kasih Ramadhan Charity Drive, DST has supported community works through other collaboration projects with government ministries including the SMS Brunei Prihatin for orphan funds as well as the SMS Brunei Prihatin for Humanitarian Fund on Palestine Refugees.
