Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) held a talk entitled ‘Sexual Harassment in the Workplace’ at the Senate Room, Chancellor Hall yesterday.
It was organised by the Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) and Student Affairs Section (SAS), UBD.
Royal Brunei Police Force’s (RBPF) Deputy Superintendent and Head of the Woman and Child Abuse Unit Norkhatijah binti Haji Zainal delivered the talk attended by over 50 UBD staff and employees.
She was received by guest of honour UBD Assistant Vice Chamcellor (Research) and Innovation Associate Professor Dr Abby Tan Chee Hong.
The talk sought to educate employees and staff on what constitutes as sexual harassment, proper reporting procedures, existing legislation to protect the victim and the rights of the complainant.
Earlier this year, the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace was brought to light during the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting, where it was revealed that 74 per cent of those who encountered sexual harassment did not lodge a report and 84 per cent were not aware that there were existing laws to protect them.
