Raising awareness on good vision among rural folk

Members of Lions Club of Belait visited Mendaram Besar Longhouse on Sunday a part of their annual campaign to raise awareness on the importance of vision among the rural folk in conjunction with World Sight Day.

The group was joined by members of Brunei Ophthalmology Society (BOS), led by its President Dr Hajah Helena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Hurairah. Meanwhile, Lions Club of Belait was led by its President Sushell Kaur.

During the visit, longhouse residents received eye tests, carried out by optometrists and ophthalmologists from VisionCare and BOS, and health examination by doctors from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

According to Lions Club of Belait Immediate Past President Joseph Teo, the association will cover half the cost of eyeglasses while off-the-shelf reading glasses will be provided by VisionCare and Brotherhood Seafood Paradise Restaurant.

Forty residents were referred for further eye test, while 33 received reading glasses, and 11 were found to require more comprehensive examination at hospital.
