A 23-year-old local man was charged yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court with escaping quarantine from an isolation centre.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dayangku Didi-Nuraza binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff pressed the charge against Mohammad Hadi bin Abdullah, under the Penal Code.

The defendant is alleged to have escaped from the COVID-19 Holding Area Ma’had, while under quarantine as a COVID-positive patient, at 10pm on September 24, to collect an item at the parking lot of the Hua Ho Petani Mall.

The charge, which also states that the defendant’s act risked the spread of COVID-19 infection, carries the penalty of five years’ jail maximum and a fine. Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman adjourned the case to October 5, to make way for the police to complete their investigations.
