Public park’s rectification works need to happen soon

I would like to commend the authority for the prompt response to a letter published by Brisk Walker in the Opinion page back in February, regarding the dire state of Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas. It showed the authority’s concerns of the well-being of park goers.

However, as a regular jogger, my experience says the state of the park has declined since February. Initially, it was just one spot under the bridge where there were no streetlights.

Now, more bulbs have blown out and joggers, such as myself, have to depend on the lights from surrounding areas, such as Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex, to guide us through the path.

Due to the dimness of the area, it has now become a dating site for young couples, which I’m sure is not the objective of the park.

I hope the authority would start the rectification works detailed in their February letter soon. If the lighting issue persisted, the park being a dating site might end up being the least of its problem. What if a girl got sexually assaulted or robbed?

Perhaps the authority should also consider installing surveillance cameras around the park to keep anything untoward from taking place. It is a park to commemorate our monarch’s reign, after all, and not a public space to promote anti-social and criminal activities.
