I am very proud of the achievements of our athletes at the recent Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games). I cannot wait to see what new heights they would reach in the next meet.
The decision to go heavy on martial arts, such as wushu, karate and pencak silat was commendable. It is an area where we shine the brightest. With more investment on coaches and facilities, we may even be able to break onto the world stage.
In the next few years, perhaps we could also focus on up-and-comers like weightlifting and obstacle course. We have had some success in these sports, so under the right conditions, I believe our athletes would be able to excel.
As a sport fan, it was a relief to see the authority make selection based on the strengths of our athletes instead of the popularity of the sports. While football is still far and away the most watched and played sport in our country, it will take more time before we can find the recipe for success.
