Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong conducted a working visit focussing on the economic activities of One Village, One Product (1K1P) managed by several village consultative councils (MPKs) across the Brunei-Muara District yesterday.
Also present were Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Salminan bin Haji Burut, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan, Brunei-Muara District Officer Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim; senior officers at the MoHA and officers from the Brunei-Muara District Office.
Among the MPKs scheduled for the visit yesterday were MPK of RPN Mentiri, MPK of Sungai Matan and MPK of Sungai Bunga.
The minister began his visit to MPK RPN Mentiri at Mukim Mentiri Community Hall to take a closer look at the development of MPK RPN Mentiri’s 1K1P main product which is Kuih Jala named ‘Kuih Jala Hijrah’.
The minister was welcomed by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Mentiri Pengiran Haji Ismail bin Pengiran Ibrahim.
During his visit, the minister watched the demonstration of Kuih Jala-making handled by female MPK members.
The visit continued to MPK Sungai Matan where the minister and his delegation were received by LegCo member and Penghulu of Mukim Kota Batu Yang Berhormat Naim bin Haji Kamis and Acting Village Head of Kampong Sungai Matan Zulkhairi bin Haji Junaidi.
The visit at Sungai Matan saw the minister and his delegation briefed on the economic activities comprising seafood products managed by the MPK Sungai Matan members.
The minister and his delegation made their way to MPK Sungai Bunga to look at the making of their 1K1P products such as prawn, fish and squid crackers as well as a homestay service ‘Seri Tanjung Homestay’.
The minister and his delegation were welcomed by Acting Village Head of Kampong Pulau Baru-Baru, Sungai Bunga and Tanjong Kidana Haji Zaini bin Salleh who briefed on the products from the MPK Sungai Bunga.
Several MPKs across the Brunei-Muara District have been successful in producing food products such as traditional kuih and seafood products as well as providing tourism services.
The working visit sought to encourage residents, particularly the youth, to be more active and enhance their activities and programmes that promote unity in the mukim and village consultative council and further enhance the 1K1P of their villages.
The number of community participation in F&B economic activities such as food and drinks, eco-tourism services, agriculture, farming and fishing as well as handicrafts between 2018 and 2019 increased from 1,003 to 1,057, according to statistics provided by MoHA.
The number of 1K1P entrepreneurs between 2018 and 2019 also increased from 127 to 141, and the number of 1K1P products from 222 to 253.
