It was pure delight to see art mimicking nature. The flora and fauna of Brunei became alive in front of our eyes as 30 secondary students of St Andrew’s School with able guidance of teachers, painted the animals and plants native to Brunei. With encouragement and support from Principal Tan Lian Lian, these students and teachers took upon themselves the daunting task of painting the extraordinary giant hashtag display panel. The project was part of an effort to instil patriotism through art to mark the 36th National Day.
The painting process of #nbd36 began on January 15, and ended a month later on February 14. In conjunction with the school’s ‘Go Green Together’ campaign for 2020, the theme ‘Flora and Fauna’ was selected to raise awareness on the rich biodiversity to be found in Brunei.
The hashtag panel has been proudly displayed alongside five others in front of the city’s iconic Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin launched the hashtag panel display on February 16.
Those in attendance included, Principal and teacher-in-charge of the project Tan Lian Lian, student artists, teachers and parents. The magnificent flora and fauna design and artwork is something each student and teacher involved takes pride in, and is a testament of everyone’s teamwork and commitment. The artists also got the rare opportunity to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on March 1 at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien and explain the theme of their hashtag panel project. They felt it was an honour to be given the opportunity as the youths of Brunei to celebrate the National Day and show their love for their country through their artwork.
