Programme raises awareness on healthier food choices among students

A GROUP of Pengiran Anak Puteri Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah Religious School (SUPAPMHB)students and their parents joined a Healthy Supermarket Tour at the Supa Save in Beribi yesterday.

The tour was organised by the Ministry of Health through its Health Promotion Centre and Ministry of Religious Affairs through its Islamic Studies Department as part of their Health Awareness Programme series on Diabetes in conjunction with World Diabetes Day 2019.

Among the programme’s objective was to raise awareness on healthier food choices and educate the students and parents to make healthier, informed choices in the supermarket environment by reading nutrition and food labels.

The programme also aimed to educate students in choosing the right nutrition and avoid non-healthy and imbalanced diet considered as the main factor contributing towards non-communicable diseases.

Participants were introduced to five checkpoints at the supermarket related to the Healthy Plate – Vegetables, Fruits, Proteins, Drinks and Carbohydrates – and visited each checkpoint within the hour to get information on each components of the healthy plate.

Among participating religious schools were Pengiran Anak Puteri ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah Religious School in Kampong Mentiri, SUPAPMHB in Kampong Serusop, Pengiran Anak Puteri Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam Mulaut Religious School and Beribi Religious School.

More tours will be conducted by staff from Health Promotion Centres on selected Fridays for two sessions – 9am to 10am and 10am to 11am. Thirty students and their parents will join the trip, chosen on a first-come-first-served basis.
