Professionalism on low foot traffic days is a big ask

I’m writing in response to a letter by Mr Spectrum on ‘Professionalism missing in customer-facing jobs’. While I agree that there is a need to carry oneself professionally on the job, the writer was referring to shop assistants in a shopping mall.

I have been to shopping malls during the week and it bears more resemblance to a ghost town than a place full of people looking for some retail therapy.

What are these shop assistants to do than to busy themselves with other activities? Wouldn’t it be asking for too much from them to stand upright at all times, despite knowing that the foot traffic is painfully low?
