Prince Haji Sufri graces Olympic Day 2019

HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) joined local athletes to celebrate Olympic Day 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.

Accompanying His Royal Highness were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak ‘Aliiyah Amalul Bulqiah, Vice President of BDNOC Haji Mohd Zamri bin Dato Paduka Haji Hamdani in his capacity as the Co-Chairman of the Organising Committee, as well as the members of the committee.

Following the launch ceremony, His Royal Highness participated in a six-minute warm up session.

His Royal Highness then visited the various sports on display including local traditional games, as well as the Sports Medicine and Research Centre and Brunei Darussalam Anti-Doping Committee booths.

His Royal Highness also witnessed demonstrations of junior athletics, hockey, taekwondo, futsal, netball, karate-do and others. His Royal Highness met with former national Olympians – Maziah Mahusin who competed in the women’s 400m at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Mohamed Fakhri Ismail who competed in the men’s 100m and Jaspar Yu (men’s single badminton) at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Other notable Olympians who represented Brunei in previous Olympics Games were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem, who is the first Olympian for the country in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States for shooting; Haseri Asli (100m) and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem (shooting) at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia; Jimmy anak Ahar (men’s 1,500m) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; Awangku Hafiy Tajuddin Rositi (men’s 400m) and Anderson Lim (men’s freestyle 200m) at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London; and Maizurah Abdul Rahim (women’s 200M) at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

His Royal Highness also visited the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games booth where he met Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Motohiko Kato.

Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Saidah binti Haji Wahid @ Burut were also present.

The Olympic Day 2019 is organised by BDNOC in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Department to commemorate the World Olympic Day which falls every June 23. This year’s celebration is filled with sports activities, with the concept to raise awareness on the importance of fair play, sports for the community and sports for health which are in line with main Olympic values.
