Preserving language, arts of literature

The Baca Bahana Puisi Antarabangsa 2022 was held virtually on Monday, seeing Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin as the guest of honour.

The event was also held live via the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) social media platform.

Held in conjunction with World Poetry Day, the event was organised by the Literature and Magazines Section of the DBP under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), in collaboration with Putra Seni Group and Brunei Darussalam Association of Writers (Asterawani).

Acting DBP Director Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab and Acting DBP Deputy Director Hajah Sariani binti Ishak also participated.

Baca Bahana Puisi Antarabangsa is a project that combines Baca Bahana with International Poetry Reading, held every March 21. It aims to serve as a platform to gather and foster ties among local and foreign writers, commemorate World Poetry Day, preserve the language and arts of literature, and promote local writers in the international arena.

Eight writers and arts activists presented their recorded poems, derived from a number of departed literature figures whose works are compiled in Bahana magazines.

They included Rozina binti Haji Salim delivering Sepi Sendiri – written by Allahyarham Dato Paduka Haji Muslim bin Haji Burmat (Muslim Burmat); Mohammad Khairol Nazwan bin Haji Karim presenting Jalan Lurus Yang Abadi – written by Allahyarham Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Yahya bin Haji Ibrahim (Yahya MS); and Lenna Norsusilanita delivering Lagu Rindu – written by Allahyarham Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman (Zaris MS/PH Mohammad Abd Rahman).

Additionally, the International Declamation of Poetry saw the involvement of 23 literature strategic partners comprising Asterawani, Putra Seni Group, the Culture and Arts Body (B2K), Alumni of MASTERA Writing Programme, RAKIS Club of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, youth and literature enthusiasts as well as language and culture representatives from local institutions as well as those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Egypt, Italy and South Korea.
