A 38-year-old local was sentenced to 20 months’ jail and ordered to settle a BND1,000 fine yesterday, after he pleaded guilty to theft-related charges.

Acting Senior Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim ordered Rusdi bin Awang Mustapa to serve an additional month’s jail in default of payment.

DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli detailed how the defendant misappropriated an unattended car at a Kampong Sinarubai graveyard some time between December 22, 2020 and January 4.

He entered the vehicle and started the engine using a pair of scissors he brought with him. Later, the defendant switched the registration plates to cover it up.

The owner realised his vehicle had gone missing from his home compound, and lodged a police report leading to its recovery.

Meanwhile, the defendant struck a house in Kampong Lumapas on January 3, making away with a perfume, body lotion, a phone charger and a pair of headphones.

The police received a call from the house occupant at 10pm the same night, reporting the items had gone missing from his room.

The next day, a Kampong Kilanas house occupant had returned from work at 5pm to find his belongings had gone missing from the garage.

He checked for CCTV footage and came across one showing the defendant using a stick to point the CCTV camera in a different direction. A police report was lodged, leading to the defendant’s arrest. He admitted that he had taken a compressor and sander from the garage, which have since been recovered.
