Plastic packaging and diapers were among the common rubbish found at Kampong Pekan Lama where 244 kilogrammes of waste were hauled by 40 volunteers under the River Clean-Up Operation (RECOVER) project yesterday.

The collaborative community service project was conducted by the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Brunei and Save Kampong Ayer to gather solid waste found along the Brunei River in Kampong Ayer.

The event began with a talk on the topic ‘Issue of Waste Management in Kampong Ayer and its Impact’ at Sungai Kebun Mosque, where participants also learnt about the socio-cultural value of Bakut at Pekan Lama and Peramu.

The project aimed to provide immediate short-term relief to the environment by engaging volunteers and the local Kampong Ayer community through the collective effort of a mass river clean-up.

The organisers hoped that the volunteers learnt more about Bruneian heritage at Kampong Ayer and its importance.
