Planting for a greener tomorrow

Lyna Mohamad

Some 15 youth aged 13-17 planted fruit saplings as part of the Global Awareness and Impact Alliance’s (GAIA) monthly Youth Series programme at Kebun Tang Salangan in Kampong Tungku yesterday.

The event’s goal was to raise awareness on climate change and the importance of maintaining a healthy environment for the future generation.

The Youth Series programme, designed by GAIA, aims to equip youth with skill sets to build resilience and self-determination for a stable future with different lessons taught through GAIA’s monthly activities. Following the tree planting, the participants will attend WIRA Camp and the Youth Leadership Summit, before finishing with mentoring programme.

The activity was also held in collaboration with local environmental organisation Green 9Brunei, and Brunei-Muara District Scouts Association, who have developed and maintained Kebun Tang Salangan.

Legislative Council member and co-founder of Green Brunei Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari and GAIA Youth Series Director Dayangku Nadeeya binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh attended the event.

Also present were Brunei-Muara District Scout Commissioner Pengiran Supri bin Pengiran Haji Hashim, Brunei-Muara Assistant District Commissioner for Rover Scout Haji Samsuddin bin Ahmad and Brunei-Muara Assistant District Commissioner Special Task Haji Mohd Khairul Anuar bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Mohd Salleh.

GAIA complements its Youth Series programme with other community engagement initiatives under the Global Analysis, where youth and the public are encouraged to participate in seminars and workshops to develop intellectual thoughts in regional and global issues.
