THE finals for the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources’ (SMARTER) Brunei first-ever Charity Bowling event was held at the Grand Seria Bowling Centre yesterday.
Themed ‘Let’s BOWL (Be Optimistic With Love) For Autism’, the charity event was organised in partnership with United Architects of the Philippines (Brunei Chapter) and the Pinoy Bowlers Club with the support of the Filipino Association in Brunei Darussalam.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin was the guest of honour.
In his opening speech, SMARTER Brunei President Malai Haji Abdullah bin Malai Haji Othman said that he had been looking forward to such an activity which prioritises the involvement of the whole family and meets the centre’s ‘Safety, Suitability and Serenity’ motto.
“Because of the turnout to our first bowling event, we will definitely be making the next event bigger,” he said. “This event is actually a follow up to and continuation of the World Autism Awareness Day 2019 celebration. Such events are great for the National Vision 2035 goal of strengthening the family institution and promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as to foster an inclusive and autism-friendly society.”
Twenty bowlers from across the country – who managed to squeeze past the preliminary rounds of the competition which began in early April – bowled it out against one another for the chance to be crowned champion in a gripping event held in the morning.
William Cabotage from the Pinoy Bowlers Club emerged as champion of the mini tournament after shaking off the spirited challenge of Pengiran Sofidzan bin Pengiran Haji Masri from the Telbru Bowlers, the two bowlers neck-and-neck with each other all the way and even tied with each other at one point with a scratch score of 554.
Finishing the event behind the top two bowlers in ‘second’ place was Siti Zubaidah binti Haji Mahbub from the Brunei Muara Bowling Association (PBBM) with a final scratch score of 553.
The top four bowlers of the event were presented with trophies by the guest of honour.
The remaining finalists were also handed medals to mark their participation in the event.
The guest of honour and other guests also received certificates of appreciation.
