PIED Hornbill emerged as champion of the Belait Under-10 7-a-side Football Tournament 2019 after beating BSRC FC Youth Red 2-0 in the finals at the Arena Football Field in Seria yesterday.
BSRC FC Youth Red placed second as the losing finalist.
The tournament started on April 14 and was organised by the Belait District Football Association (PBDB) and JCAD Enterprise. It saw seven teams from across the Belait District competing against each other in two groups.
The seven teams were BSRC FC Youth Red, Pied Hornbill, and SR Panaga for Group ‘A’, and Muhammad Alam FC, BSRC Youth Blue, Rhinoceros Hornbill and Ahmad Tajuddin FC for Group ‘B’.
At the end of the group stages, Pied Hornbill, BSRC FC Youth Red, Muhammad Alam FC and Rhinoceros Hornbill advanced to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals held early yesterday morning, both Pied Hornbill and BSRC FC Youth Red defeated Muhammad Alam FC and Rhinoceros Hornbill respectively to advance to the finals.
Rhinoceros Hornbill dominated Muhammad Alam FC 5-1 in the third place match-up to finish in third place with Muhammad Alam FC in fourth place.
Present on behalf of Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin at yesterday’s finals as the guest of honour was Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Maiddin bin Pengiran Haji Said. He was welcomed by Executive Committee member at the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) and Secretary-General at the PBDB Morni bin Haji Zakaria and PBDB committee members.
The guest of honour presented prizes and medals to the top four teams as well as handing the challenge trophy to champion Pied Hornbill.
The guest of honour also presented a special trophy for best player of the tournament to Rhinoceros Hornbill’s Harry Tomlin who scored an impressive total of eight goals during the tournament.
Acting Belait District Officer Ridzuan bin Haji Ahmad, PBDB members, parents and guardians of the participating players were also present.
Morni explained that the tournament was an opportunity to not only involve youth in the sports of football at the grassroots level, but also to help showcase their football skills and talents, while at the same promote and encourage living a healthy lifestyle among the youth in the country.
