Philippines logs 5,735 new COVID-19 cases

MANILA (XINHUA) – The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday 5,735 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,572,287.

The death toll climbed to 27,577 after 176 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.

The Philippines, which has around 110 million population, has tested more than 15 million people since the outbreak in January 2020.

The Delta variant has spread in the Philippines, the DOH said yesterday after detecting 97 new Delta variant cases. The new cases pushed the country’s tally to 216.

The DOH said 88 of the 97 cases were local, and six were returning overseas Filipinos. The DOH is checking whether the three other cases are local or returning Filipinos.
