I would like to add on to the letter, ‘Getting taxed on personal items’, which was published in the Opinion page of the Bulletin on August 3.
My aunt just returned from holidaying in the United Kingdom (UK). During inspection, not only did they open her baggage, she was asked if she had bought the neck pillow as well as her luggage from the UK. These were her personal belongings. Why are these items suddenly taxable?
My aunt calmly explained that she had bought the luggage as well as the pillow in Brunei, prior to her UK trip. However, it didn’t stop the officer from taxing her over small items she had brought back for her family.
Just like Confused Traveller, I would like to know if the authorities could update us on what items are now considered taxable.
