Permanent resident fined BND9K for possessing smuggled cigarettes

A 53-year-old permanent resident possessing smuggled cigarettes at home was ordered to settle a BND9,000 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu ordered Mazli bin Lai to serve nine months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of 10 cartons and five packets of cigarettes at his home in Jalan Kamangsi Selatan, RPN Kampong Meragang.

The prosecutor informed court that Customs preventive officers who inspected the defendant’s house at 2.45pm on May 20, 2020, found the cigarettes.

The court also ordered the seized cigarettes to be forfeited to the state.
