A charity sale to raise funds for Belait orphans, organised by the Pertiwi Association at the Belait District Office’s Seria branch, opened yesterday.

The 36th Membeli Sambil Menderma project is held as an annual charity initiative in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan and the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations, as well as to provide a platform for local businesses and entrepreneurs to promote their products.

The charity sale features 20 stalls selling biscuits, cakes, kueh and other handmade dishes.
Pertiwi Association Chairperson Fatimah binti Tanji said the project has been conducted since 1986 with the goal of promoting local businesses, as well as raising funds for orphans in the district.

Ten per cent of the vendors’ proceeds will go towards the Belait District Orphans Fund.

She said in addition to the charity sale, the association will also conduct a myriad of other activities including the recitation of Doa Tahlil and Surah Yaasiin, Tedarus Al-Quran, and Khatam Al-Quran.

Acting Belait District Officer Mohamad Yassin bin Haji Ahmed praised the association for the annual initiative, adding that it helps to promote local products while also raise funds for orphans ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin and penghulus and village heads of the Belait District were also present at the opening event.

The charity sale will be held daily from 10am to 10pm until the end of Ramadhan.
