Performances mark International Mother Language Day

The Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam hosted a high-tea reception with musical performances in celebration of International Mother Language Day at Mulia Hotel yesterday.

High Commissioner (designate) of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona and the high commission officials were present.

Director of Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Rosli bin Pengiran Haji Halus and his spouse were the guests of honour.

Also in attendance were members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The event saw several Malay song performances from St Andrew’s School students and a rendition by singers from Brunei Music Society, joined by Bangladeshi children.

A roundtable discussion on Language and Culture : Bangladesh and Malay was also held.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated every February 21 as a reflection of the commitment of all nations to preserve and protect mother languages.

It was an initiative by Bangladesh and a number of other countries during the UNESCO general assembly in 1999.
