MOTORCYCLE clubs have long been a symbol of solidarity and fraternity among the riders, although the specific purpose might vary from club to club.

For some, being a motorcycle club member isn’t enough, so they have taken the step of forming a motorcycle association, which translates to wider membership and more activities such as volunteer work and charity events, which attracts plenty of positive attention and boosts goodwill among the local community.

This was the aim of the founders of the Darussalam Motorcycle Association (PEMODA), which was established on April 18, 1996, with 30 members and the motto of ‘Bersepadu’ (‘Integrated’).

Founded by Saban bin Johari, Abdul Latif bin Jamil and Mohd Shahminan bin Haji Besar, PEMODA has since grown in membership, and is known both regionally and internationally.

Five individuals have assumed the association’s leadership since its establishment: Haji Daud bin Haji Jamil from 1996 to 2000; Musa bin Haji Mahadi from 2000 to 2002; Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Mohd Arshad from 2002 to 2006; Haji Daud (re-elected) from 2006 to 2008; Haji Maidin bin Mumin from 2008 to 2010; and Pengiran Haji Redzuan bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad from 2010 up to the present, as PEMODA’s longest-serving president.

The association’s participation in national and regional events include the parent association for the organising of the Borneo Island International Big Bike Festival (BIIBBF); collaborating with other parent associations throughout Borneo; the parent association for the organising of the Know Our Country Convoy (KKNK); collaborating with registered motorcycle clubs in Brunei Darussalam; the Marshal and Motorcycle Commissar for the cycling event of the 20th SEA Games in Brunei Darussalam in 1999; participation in Brunei’s National Day celebrations; and the annual organising of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday and patriotic rides.

PEMODA has also done Road Safety Awareness projects such as the Marshal Programme from 2013 up to the present; the 2015 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Day; the 2017 PEMODA Mo-torcycle Convention; the Safety Awareness Ride from 2013 up to the present; the 5P Pilot Project of Prudent Motorcycle Riders with the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council in 2018; and the 5K Ethical Driving Project at IBTE (Institute of Brunei Technical Education) campuses since February 2019.
