PB moulding leaders of tomorrow

Politeknik Brunei (PB) was established with consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in a titah delivered during the Teacher’s Day celebration on October 18, 2008 to accelerate the country’s human resources development, emphasised by the National Development Plan (RKN) and Brunei Vision 2035.

This technical education transformation was a timely response towards the evolution of the local and global economic landscape, which directly affected the current and future skilled workforce requirements of the nation.

PB opened its doors in January 2012, introducing nine two-year Advanced Diploma programmes in the fields of Business, ICT and Science and Engineering.

In July 2015, PB revamped its former Advanced Diploma programmes and began offering its new three-year Level 5 Diploma programmes to students with a minimum qualification of five GCE ‘O’ Level credits (based on relevant subjects), as well as those with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) qualifications. The Level 5 Diploma qualification is equivalent to Higher National Diploma (HND).

Since then, 22 academic Diploma programmes are currently offered by the four schools under PB – the School of Business, the School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Health Sciences.

PB reached another milestone as it was awarded the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015 on November 27, 2017 by Bureau Veritas (BV), making it the first higher education institution in Brunei Darussalam to be certified, particularly in providing Level 5 Diploma Education in the fields of Business, Information Communication Technology and Science and Engineering.

In support of the institution’s vision on nurturing innovation, PB is also an Institutional Member of the Oracle Academy and an Authorised Academy for CompTIA. Thus, PB remains keen and unequivocal in developing ICT talents of young Bruneians (particularly those passionate about ICT or technology in general), since the Oracle Academy advances computer science education globally to drive and boost knowledge, innovation, skills development, and diversity in technological fields by offering both educators and students computer science education resources.

To learn more about the entry requirements and programmes offered at PB, the public is invited to visit the PB booth at the Higher Education Expo 2020 at Bridex Hall 1. The expo will be held at BRIDEX Halls 1 and 2 in Jerudong on February 8 and 9, from 8am to 5pm.

The School of Business (SBS) aims to produce dynamic and knowledgeable graduates equipped with skills for engaging in business and providing a solid foundation for future progression. We take pride of our young, dedicated local and international staff members who bring a range of work experience and academic backgrounds, and are innovative in delivering teaching and learning sessions in the five programmes being offered – Diploma in Business Accounting and Finance, Diploma in Business Studies, Diploma in Business Studies (Entrepreneurship), Diploma in Business Studies (Human Resource Management) and Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing).

These programmes offer highly relevant business modules, making them perfect for those who are planning to move into or develop professional expertise in various business disciplines. Coursework involves practical activities that are designed to equip students with necessary core skills and provide a wide view of the changing nature of doing business.

The School of ICT (SICT) – Technology empowers the way we think, learn and work, and it has become imperative in the workplace. It is also an important skill and knowledge required by many in multidisciplinary industries. To meet the challenges and demands of the IT industry, the SICT addresses PB’s vision in producing skilled and marketable graduates through quality education and exposure to the Brunei ICT industry.

The SICT was established in January 2012, offering three advanced diploma programmes in Computer Network, Information Systems and Technology, and Web Computing with an enrolment of 139 students. Later on, SICT introduced two new diploma programme called Information Science and Digital Media. SICT is led by a head of school, assistant head of school and is supported by 20 lecturers.

SICT continuously reviews its curriculum to complement the Brunei ICT Industry Competency Framework (BIICF) under the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI). SICT is looking into the prospects of integrating industry professional certification into its existing curriculum.

Among others, the School of ICT has been entrusted to manage the institution’s Learning Management System (LMS) activities as part of the PB Five-Year Development Plan (2015-2020). In support of this, SICT aims to introduce a new ‘E-Learning Unit’ to focus on LMS and e-learning initiatives for PB, in the near future.

The School of Health Sciences (SHS) – In 2015, the three Level 4 Diploma programmes offered at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Insitute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was transfer to PB. Since 2015, the SHS was established, offering diplomas in various health sciences disciplines in Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic. From July 2018, all the Diploma programmes offered were upgraded to Level 5 Diploma.
