A 63-year-old local man was ordered to pay a fine of BND2,000 or face two months’ jail in default of payment by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to the charge of drunk driving.

According to the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), Muhd Hamir bin Abdul Hamid was involved in a car accident at Jalan Mulaut. Investigations revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

During court arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 26(1)(a) of the Road and Traffic Act Chapter 68 for driving under the influence of alcohol. A blood sample of the defendant also indicated alcohol levels above the limit.

The court, presided by Magistrate Marzuqi bin Sabtu gave time until November 2020 for the fine settlement, and also ordered a three-year suspension of his driving licence.

The RBPF reminded the public, especially drivers to always obey road and traffic regulations.

The prosecution in the case was handled by Inspector Hayati binti Tassim of the Bandar Seri Begawan Police Prosecution Unit.
