The National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) has appointed Paul Smalley as the new National Coach and Head of Player and Coach Development, according to its website.
Paul Smalley, credited with playing a key part in reviving the elite and international set-up and performances at junior and senior levels with the Bangladesh Football Federation, has joined the NFABD Technical Department effective October 31, 2019.
Smalley, who joined the Southern Federation of Bangladesh in 2016 as National Technical Director, orchestrated an elite player development plan aimed at creating more successful international sides across junior age groups, senior and women’s football.
Along with coaching and education scheme to support the development of coaches at all levels of the game, Smalley achieved technical plaudits from Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) with his work on the technical structure which has allowed an AFC Coaching Convention ‘A’ Diploma status.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Federation of Bangladesh, but I am looking forward to this fresh and dynamic opportunity with such a visionary and progressive Football Federation,” Paul said according to the NFABD website.
He attracted much interest from clubs and member associations around the world with his all-round technical experience and the recent Bangladesh national team World Cup 2020 Qualifier performances notably against Qatar and India.
Paul was a graduate of England’s National Football School, a youth international and former professional football player. He was also a national coach in England having worked at international level with both the men and women teams from youth to senior level.
Paul gained experience in Europe, Oceania, Australia, Korea, Asia, Southern Asia and the United States, in both national and international scenes including the World Cup. He also held positions in coaching and technical director.
In addition, Paul’s portfolio also included as the Head of Youth at Portsmouth FC in the Premier League in the United Kingdom and holds the highest qualifications in youth development, coaching and coach education within Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and AFC mandates.
Paul will be responsible for the development of NFABD Coach Education in providing more quality coaching into football.
He will develop an international set-up philosophy and DNA to develop both players and coaches at junior and senior levels. He will take responsibility for the flagship under-23 and senior international teams.
