Paul Cawte emerged champion in the open category of the New Year Chess Blitz 2021 after accumulating 8.5 points at the Brunei Chess Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last weekend.
Eko Handoko finished second with eight points followed by Israel Candelario with 6.5 points.
Haji Kipli, Pengiran Abdul Rahman and Neville Blackie completed the top six.
Yap Choow Tun emerged winner of the above 50 years category, followed by Emran and Haji Nassir.
Meanwhile, in the under 20 category, Zahirul Haq emerged champion followed by Awangku Nazwan and Hazim Safwan.
Chan Yu Heng topped the under 16 category with Vian Loh Kar Zhou finishing second and Woo Kui Weng settling for third.
Awangku Ayyub won the under-14 category followed by Howard Wee and Eyshal Bahrin.
In the under-12 category, Harrod Wee claimed top spot while Ainul Mardhiah finished second.
Organised by the Brunei Chess Federation, the meet was contested in accordance to the Swiss system of nine rounds.
The federation hoped to use chess to enhance strategic thinking among the players.
