    ‘Parents vital in children’s character-building’

    Rokiah Mahmud

“Parents have the important responsibility of creating a Sakinah, Mawaddah Wa Rahmah family and build their children’s character by providing a healthy and Islamic environment.

“There are a lot of cases of parental issues that contribute to social ills. According to a study, the collapse of moral and social values is caused by family crises. In addition, parents’ failure in carrying out their duties and responsibilities cause disputes in the family institution as well as moral decay among youth.”

This was shared by Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan’s (KUPU SB) Director of Fiqh Al-Usrah Research Centre Dr Haji Sham bin Haji Amin in his opening remarks at the 2nd Islamic Parenting Skills Workshop at Tarbiyah Hall of KUPU SB yesterday.

The advancement of information technology has influenced the way children are being raised, he added. The director said the family environment needs to be conducive to shaping a future generation that is knowledgable and with strong moral values.

The event, which closes today, features topics such as the application of Aqidah and moral values according to As-Sunnah in family institution and Maqasid Syariah in moulding a happy family.

Yesterday’s workshop featured Associate Professor at the KUPU SB’s Centre for Research and Understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah Dr Muhammad Yusuf bin Khalid, Dean of Faculty of Education Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Zahiri bin Awang Mat, assistant lecturer at the Fiqh Al-Usrah Research Centre Pengiran Norizzati binti Pengiran Haji Kasharan and assistant lecturer at the Faculty of Education Ali Hardi bin Haji Mohamed as speakers.

Forty-two participants, comprised officers and staff of KUPU SB, the Special Education Department at the Ministry of Education, the Islamic Studies Department, the Mosque Affairs Department, the Syariah Affairs Department at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Royal Brunei Police Force.
