Parenting skills in focus

The Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) through the Fiqh al-Usrah Research Centre conducted a workshop on Islamic Parenting Skills at the university’s Tarbiyah Hall.

Fiqh al-Usrah Research Centre Director Hilman bin Haji Salim as the chairman of the workshop said one of the main roles of the family institution is to produce a disciplined and responsible generation able to overcome a host of social issues.

He said with the explosion of information technology, it has impacted how education should be carried out.

He believed parents need to play a vital role in providing a healthy and Islamic environment. At the same time, they need to create a Sakinah Mawaddah Wa Rahmah family unit.

Among the topics discussed during the first day of the workshop were the basics in forming an Islamic family; religious education in building a happy family; applying the Aqidah of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah values in a family institution; alimony and responsibility towards children; guidance and counselling for Islamic family; control on the use of social media for children; and challenges and contemporary children’s education methods.

The workshops attracted 91 officers and staff from the public and private sectors.

The morning session saw assistant lecturer at Jawi Studies and Kitab Turath Research Centre Abdul Rahman bin Haji Ajak discuss the basics of building a family according to the Islamic law.

He explained that knowledge and practise of rights and responsibilities for each family member are part of the axis of a harmonious Islamic family.

He also noted that ignorance and negligence contribute to breaking up a family.

Meanwhile, senior assistant professor of the Faculty of Education Dr Ahmad Yunus explained that towards the effort in forming a family institution and applying parenting skills, the implementation of Islamic education is necessary through emphasis on Maqasid Syariah.

The afternoon session continued with a discussion on the application of Aqidah Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah values by professor at Centre of Research and the Understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Yusuf bin Khalid.
