France, Britain win triathlon golds

PARIS (AFP) – France’s Cassandre Beaugrand and Britain’s Alex Yee won gold as the Paris Olympics triathlon went ahead yesterday in a huge relief for organisers.

Hazardous pollution levels in the River Seine in recent days had threatened to cause chaos to the triathlon competition and embarrassment to Paris Games chiefs.

Organisers were forced to cancel training this week in the river and postponed the men’s race on Tuesday after the Seine was found to be too dirty for athletes following rainstorms last week.

But despite heavy rain overnight, which can stir up pollution, organisers said early yesterday the water levels had been “assessed as compliant” for the women’s event and the men’s immediately afterwards to go ahead.

The women’s field dived into the Seine at the historic Alexandre III bridge in the heart of the City of Light before a cycling stage and then a running stage, as big crowds lined the route.

Beaugrand, a 27-year-old from the Parisian suburbs, only emerged from the leading pack on a thrilling final lap of the running stage before crossing the line and sinking to her knees in elation.

She said she had “never doubted” that the swimming would go ahead, despite the threat of cancellation, which would have turned the race into a duathlon of only cycling and running.

“It would have been shameful for our sport… it would have been a disgrace,” she told reporters after victory.

In the delayed men’s triathlon, Yee surged past New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde in the final stretch in a dramatic finish to improve on his silver from the Tokyo Games.

In other early action on day five, China’s table tennis world number one Wang Chuqin suffered a shock defeat, a day after having his bat broken.

Wang won mixed doubles gold on Tuesday but his elation turned to anger after a photographer accidentally snapped his bat while jostling to take a picture.

Less than 24 hours later, Wang went out in the singles after a 4-2 defeat to Truls Moregard of Sweden.

“I’ve almost never taken a set against Wang so it’s crazy to win here at the Olympics,” said Moregard, the world number 26.

China ramped up their bid for a clean sweep in diving, prevailing in the women’s synchronised 10m platform ahead of North Korea and Britain. China have won all three golds in the sport in Paris so far.

Later, French swimming sensation Leon Marchand bid for two more Olympic gold medals in the pool at La Defense Arena.

Marchand sent the home crowd into a frenzy by winning the men’s 400m individual medley on Sunday and can expect another red-hot atmosphere when he races in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke finals.

Bank of Japan raises interest rate for second time in 17 years

TOKYO (AFP) – The Bank of Japan (BOJ) further unwound its massive monetary easing programme yesterday by hiking interest rates for only the second time in 17 years and indicating plans for more if the economy performs as officials expect.

Long-standing ultra-loose policies have made the BOJ an outlier among central banks in recent years and driven down the value of the yen.

After a two-day policy meeting, the BOJ set an interest rate of 0.25 per cent, a notch up from the previous rate of around zero to 0.1 per cent.

The move came after a hike in March that was the first since 2007 and brought an end to a maverick negative-rate policy aimed at boosting growth in the world’s fourth largest economy.

Yesterday’s decision, which also detailed plans to cut its government bond purchases, helped push the yen to less than 152 per dollar at one point.

“The bank will accordingly continue to raise the policy interest rate and adjust the degree of monetary accommodation” if the Japanese economy moves in line with predictions, the BOJ said.

Analysts had been divided on whether the BOJ would hike rates, with some predicting policymakers would wait until the autumn because of sluggish consumption in Japan.

And while wages are rising – with unions securing their biggest increases in three decades – this has been tempered by inflation, which has been above the bank’s target of two per cent since April 2022. Governor Kazuo Ueda sought to assure market-watchers that the latest move was not too risky.

“The hiked rate is still extremely low as a real interest rate. It won’t have a huge, negative impact on the economy,” he told reporters.

Wage increases have been seen across Japan in a broad range of sectors, among small and large businesses, Ueda said, with prices and wages expected to continue rising.

“Regarding personal consumption, while the impact of price increases is visible, our view is that it has remained very solid,” he added.

The bank also said it will halve its monthly Japanese Government Bond purchases from JPY6 trillion (USD40 billion) over the next two years.

The purchases have been used to help keep borrowing costs extra low for years.

The yen has plunged against the dollar over the past two and a half years as other central banks including the Fed aggressively hiked rates to tackle inflation.

The yen earlier in July hit its weakest level against the dollar since 1986 but it has strengthened since then – triggering speculation that the Japanese government had given it a helping hand.

The yen had rallied further in recent days as expectations of a rate hike grew, fuelled by media reports and comments by senior government figures.

Chief Economist at Mizuho Research and Technologies Saisuke Sakai told AFP that the BOJ is “confident” prices are moving in the direction it wants to see. “Even though consumption is a tad weak, the rise in salaries is strong which will likely boost consumption sooner or later,” Sakai said.

Hiking rates now may have prevented the yen from weakening further, and an interest rate of 0.25 “is still in the range of accommodative monetary policy” so is unlikely to trigger a recession, he added.

World stocks higher, while oil prices jump after Hamas leader killed

PHOTO: AP

AP – Global stocks advanced yesterday and oil prices jumped more than USD2 a barrel after Hamas’ top political leader Ismail Haniyeh died in an air strike.

Haniyeh died in a pre-dawn airstrike in the Iranian capital yesterday, Iran and the militant group said, blaming Israel for a shock assassination that could escalate conflict in the region, potentially affecting oil supplies.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s October 7 attack. United States (US) benchmark crude oil gained USD2.10 to USD76.83 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the international standard, picked up USD2.05 to USD80.12 per barrel.

Markets were awaiting a policy decision from the Federal Reserve (Fed), with another expected today from the Bank of England.

Inflation in the 20 countries that use the euro ticked up to 2.6 per cent in July, a report said yesterday, stubbornly above the European Central Bank’s (ECB) target. That complicates the ECB’s next decision on whether to cut interest rates and boost growth as the economy struggles to stage a convincing recovery from more than a year of stagnation.

Germany’s DAX picked up 0.4 per cent to 18,542.50, and the CAC 40 rose 1.2 per cent to 7,564.92. In London, the FTSE was up 1.4 per cent at 8,396.50.

The future for the S&P 500 advanced 0.9 per cent and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4 per cent.

Biles ‘queen’ but Italy, Brazil make history with team medals

PARIS (AFP) – Simone Biles may be the “queen” of gymnastics but Italy and Brazil made history with medals in the women’s team competition on Tuesday behind the United States (US).

The Italians matched the silver they won at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, but achieved their best result in the modern era in Paris.

Brazil’s top Olympic finish until on Tuesday had been eighth.

Italy finished 5.802 points behind a dominant US spearheaded by Biles, who achieved her fifth Olympic gold medal.

“Simone Biles has always been the queen of gymnastics,” said Italy’s Elisa Iorio. “There is nobody like her, nowhere, she’s a source of inspiration.

“The way she approaches competition makes you understand you should have fun. She’s a point of reference for all of us.”

Brazil were 6.799 off the leaders, to push Britain, the Tokyo Games bronze medallists, into fourth position.

In a thrilling finale, the silver and bronze medals were decided on the final rotation with Italy on floor, Brazil on vault and Britain on the beam.

Angela Andreoli’s acrobatic routine on the floor sealed second for Italy with Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade, the reigning Olympic vault champion, soaring to 15.100 to pip Britain to bronze by just 0.234. “We are warriors,” said Brazil’s Flavia Saraiva, who competed with a bandage over her right eye after a fall on the warm-up on uneven bars.

“I ended up a little blind in one eye but I said ‘here we go, I’m here to fight until the end’.

Andrade, 25, will compete against Biles and Sunisa Lee, the reigning Olympic all-around champion, for individual gold today.

“It’s an honour to be able to compete alongside her,” Andrade, 25, who took silver behind Lee in Tokyo, said of Biles.

“She’s a reference, a role model for the whole world, gymnastics and athletes alike to see how happy she is to compete. That’s what’s sport is all about.”

Italy, second in qualifying, were competing in the same group as the Americans but trailed in third 2.435 points behind after the vault with China second.

The Chinese finished fifth after the four rotations.

Over BND2.3M lost to online scams in 2023

Head of Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force Senior Superintendent Handrie bin Haji Amin delivers a presentation. PHOTO: JAMES KON

The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) recorded 1,137 cheating cases in 2023, of which 75 per cent were online scams, said Head of Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, RBPF Senior Superintendent Handrie bin Haji Amin.

He said this delivering a presentation on understanding and tackling cybercrime in Brunei Darussalam at the Digital Future Conference (DFC) 2024 at the Bridex Banquet Hall yesterday.

He added that the five top online scams reported last year were e-commerce scam (378 cases), social media impersonation (141 cases), loan/money scam (123 cases), investment scam (103 cases) and social media takeover scam (47 cases).

The total loss recorded stands at BND2,373,951.35, SGD42,618 and USD3,400.

E-Commerce scams, Senior Superintendent Handrie said, includes “fraud selling of goods like buying of old money”, while investment and loan scam “promises high investment returns or forex trading”. A job scam offers employment by “asking for personal information or picture or bank account”, a phishing scam involves Facebook or Telegram or Instagram hacking and blackmail and a friend scam involves “love, parcel, romance and sextortion”.

Senior Superintendent Handrie also presented a case study where a police investigation unearthed seven mule accounts, including three binance involving 11 victims. A total loss of BND102,185 was recorded.

He highlighted the challenges faced such as how ongoing technological advancements create new avenues for cyber-attacks, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for more advanced and intricate attacks, lack of understanding on basic cyber security practices and challenges in coordination and information sharing between entities, leading to difficulties in tracking and apprehending international cybercriminal networks. In response to the challenges, he said, there is a need for “cybersecurity infrastructure, education and training focusing on upskilling workforce and public awareness, public-private partnerships for information sharing and resource leveraging and international cooperation by working with global bodies and other nations to counter cyber threats”.

He also shared the future direction in tackling cybercrimes, including “leveraging AI and Quantum computing for defence, establishing resilient systems and continuous innovation, partnering with local and international entities, as well as continuing to build cyber awareness and education programmes”. – James Kon
