A 48-year-old local man was sentenced to a year’s jail after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to theft in a building.
Prosecutor Nurul Husna binti Haji Abidin revealed that Mohd Sane bin Haji Abu Bakar went to the surau on level one at The Mall, Gadong to charge his phone and sleep on May 15.
After half an hour, the defendant woke up, unplugged his phone and came across a bag that was left behind.
He rummaged through it and took a wallet, a phone earpiece, charging plug and cable.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni further heard that the owner of the bag had forgotten it after performing his prayer, and came back to find his belongings had gone missing. The owner filed a police report whose investigations were aided by CCTV footage.
The police arrested the defendant and recovered the stolen items.
The court ordered the items to be returned to the owner.
