Operation in Jerudong uncovers labour violations

    Rokiah Mahmud

An operation, codenamed ‘Operasi Sejahtera 179/2022’ in Kampong Jerudong on November 1, led by labour department officials, discovered foreign employees living in unhygienic living quarters.

The officers conducting an inspection on agricultural activities found foreign workers living in cramped and unhygienic conditions.

The employer had thus been found to have committed a violation by failing to provide clean, comfortable and safe living quarters; living quarters not according to the provision of any written law; and failure to provide first aid equipment.

The employer could be slapped with a compound of BND600 for the first offence and BND900 for the second offence. The employer was also instructed to provide the foreign workers with better living conditions.

The Labour Department reminded employers to monitor foreign workers’ welfare in accordance with the Employment Order 2009, such as preparing work contracts, providing timely payment of salaries, not abusing the Foreign Workers Licence and not violating the Employment Order 2009.
