THE opening ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam Double Open 2019 was held at the Petanque Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex on yesterday.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil was the guest of honour.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation with the cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports, the first and second round of the competition are contested in a double knockout system while the round of 16 up to the final use a knockout system.
The objectives of the tournament, held in conjunction with the 35th National Day, are to develop and introduce the sport in the country, provide opportunities to petanque players to enhance their skills as well as to foster closer ties among local and overseas players.
A total of 26 teams from Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation, 19 teams from the Sabah Petanque Association, 16 teams from the Sarawak Petanque Association, six teams from the Sabak Bernam Selangor Petanque Association and two teams from the Federal Territory of Labuan Petanque Association are currently taking part in the two-day event.
President of the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation Haji Mohammad bin Penglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Brunei Darussalam Double Open said in his welcoming remarks, “A total of 26 teams from the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation, 17 of which comprised athletes from the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation and nine teams from the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE).”
He added that the number of teams participating in the event brought to an overall total of 140 athletes.
“I am very grateful because planning outlined by the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation for 2019 has been executed through the hosting of a petanque event recognised at an international level for the first time this year with the cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports,” said the chairperson.
“This can prove the progress and success at international level which is highly encouraged.
“Organising this championship serves as a platform and preparation for a bigger hosting of championships in the coming years at regional and international level, mainly in the Asian Boules Sports Confederation Championship.”
He added that Brunei will host the 9th Borneo Cup Petanque Championship 2019 in December.
