Smoking has numerous negative impacts on health; it can lead to lung cancer. However, persuading a smoker to give up the habit is hard because of nicotine addiction. Most say they would like to quit; and a lot of them regret having picked it up in the first place.
As such, there should be an ongoing campaign to educate the public, especially the youth, about the harmful effects of smoking, to keep them from even trying.
Studies have shown that it is never too late to quit smoking. There are even clinics provided by the authorities to help smokers quit the habit. Once they quit, the repair of damaged cells in the lung can begin.
There are no legal tobacco sellers in the country. However, people still find ways to smuggle illegal cigarettes, which goes to show there is a high demand for it. Thus, we need to work together in controlling the entry of these products, so Brunei could someday declare itself a smoke-free country.
