Ong Sum Ping survived a late resurgence from Tutong Basketball to win by two points in a thrilling 72-70 victory during the 5.11 National Basketball League at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Court in Batu Bersurat last night.

A period of ruthless attack from Tutong Basketball saw them build a double-digit lead but Ong Sum Ping reduced the deficit when under-23 player Wun Ta Haw clinically slotted home after a fine pass from Lim Shi Khiong.

The second quarter went to Ong Sum Ping as Kevin Tay and Lim Jin Yuan both recorded three-pointers. Lim Aik Hock extended his team’s lead to seven points shortly after Lim made his three-pointer shot.

Lim won a duel against Tutong Basketball’s On Chee Khong for possession of the ball and earned a free throw with the added bonus of two points to restore his team’s 10-point lead.

Tutong Basketball fought back to keep them in contention, drawing similar scenes of their first encounter against Yi Nation’s V2 in their opening game.

Tutong Basketball under-23 player Jaron On made things interesting after a three-pointer reduced his side to just six points.

Tutong Basketball team captain Khoo Chin Kai set up a thrilling end to the contest after he made three-pointers including a free throw conversion with a minute on the clock remaining.

Trailing by a single point, the Tutong outfit looked to break away in search of the lead but their advances were cut short after Ong Sum Ping’s Lim crucially stepped in to steal the ball.

Tutong Basketball came close to snatch the lead but Ong Sum Ping was awarded a free throw as Wun Ta Haw took the last point for his team with 12 seconds remaining.

The competition continues with Bandar Rocket taking on Yi’s Nation V2, and a women’s match between Tutong Basketball and Belait District Basketball Association tonight.
