November launch for Brunei’s NTU Alumni Association

THE Brunei Chapter of the Nanyang Technological University Alumni Association (NTU AA), formed in February last year, will officially have a launching ceremony on November 9.

The association is recognised as the very first registered local alumni association from any of Singapore’s major educational institutions.

Alumni members comprise not only graduates from NTU and the National Institute of Education (NIE), but also include anyone who has had short courses or exchange programmes at either of the two institutions, such as Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Discovery Year and the Leaders in Education Programme at NIE.

Diploma holders and certified course participants who have completed their programmes at the Singaporean university are also eligible to enrol as members of the alumni association. While the association strives to provide a platform for fellow alumni to socialise and network professionally, it is also looking to actively promote students to continue their tertiary education in Singapore.

Despite housing two universities which are consistently ranked in the top three in Asia and among the top 15 in the world, very few Bruneians have chosen Singapore for undergraduate study, and the association hopes to change this through engagement with university-bound students and secondary schools all over the country.

Over the past 12 years, Singapore’s NTU Alumni Office has successfully set up 48 alumni associations in over 18 countries, ranging from Australia to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States (US), with the latest chapter to be formed being in South Korea. Brunei is the 49th chapter of the alumni association, and currently has over 30 members coming from various professional backgrounds.

One notable alumni is Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, who in 2015 was awarded the Nanyang Distinguished Alumni Award by the President of NTU.

NTU AA (Brunei) is now reaching out to those who have attended the university, either as graduating students, students on exchange programmes or as participants in short courses, to get in touch with the association for an invite to the launching ceremony in November.
